DIY Fabric headbands tutorial

Hello and welcome to another week. This time I'm going to show you my latest destashing project: fabric headbands. In three different versions and entirely made using fabric scraps, of course.

Find out below how to make them.

What you need:
  • two pieces of fabric - mine were 50 cm x 6 cm because I was making the headbands for my daughter. Adjust measurements if needed, but note that the fabric is not supposed to go all around the head, as you will be adding some elastic as well.
  • one piece of batting (the same size as the fabric pieces above) - this is optional but I wanted the headbands to have some volume.
  • a small piece of elastic (long enough to complete the circle around the head when taking into account seam allowances).
  • matching sewing thread
  • embellishments (optional)

    Instructions:
    • place both fabric pieces right sides together (with the batting on top), as shown below. Pin in place.

      •  Sew along both long sides and turn inside out.

      • Fold the edges of the short sides inward, insert the elastic and then squeeze the sides a bit, as shown below, giving the edges a sort of envelope look. Pin.

      • Top stitch all around (effectively securing the elastic in place).

Now you can make these in three different versions:
      •  the plain headband, using the same fabric for both sides:

        • the reversible version, using a different fabric for each side:

Now make as many as you want. They come together pretty quickly and make great homemade gifts too!

For now I made just these three. But my daughter loves them and I have so many other fabric scraps that I will make more in the future for sure.

            1. They are lovely. My daughter wore a lot of hair bands when she was younger, I made a few and then she learnt to sew and made her own. It's a great project for a beginner sewist.

              1. Thank you. I'm hoping my daughter will learn soon too. She's started hand sewing already, though her stitches are still too wobbly, but I'm scared of letting use the machine for now. Maybe in a couple of years.
